18650 Rechargeable Battery And Charger
The 18650 Rechargeable Battery is a fast-charging cylindrical lithium-ion battery (often referred to as an 18650 lithium battery) widely used in various mobile devices and electric vehicles due to its standardized size and high energy density.
18650 Rechargeable Battery Specifications

Nominal voltage: 3.7V
Charge cut-off voltage: 4.2V
Discharge cut-off voltage: 2.75V
Capacity range: usually between 1000mAh and 3500mAh, common capacity is 2200mAh-2600mAh
Energy Density: around 150-250Wh/kg.
Internal resistance: small, usually below 35mΩ.
Distinguish between positive and negative poles.

Appearance observation: The positive pole of the 18650 lithium battery is the convex end, and the negative pole is the flat bottom.
Use a multimeter: Measured by a multimeter, if it shows a positive number, then the red pen is touching the positive pole, and the black pen is touching the negative pole; if it shows a negative number, it is the opposite.
Check the silkscreen: the silkscreen on the battery casing usually also indicates the positive and negative terminals; the end with the silkscreen is the positive terminal.
Chemical reaction test: touch the battery lightly to the tip of a nail or wire; if bubbles are produced, the end in contact is the negative terminal; if there is no reaction, the other is the positive terminal.
18650 Battery Charger Introduction
Working Principle

The 18650 battery charger adopts constant current and constant voltage (CC/CV) charging mode; the charger first charges the battery with constant current and then switches to constant voltage mode when the battery voltage is close to full charge to ensure the battery is full without overcharging.
Charging Speed
The charging speed of an 18650 battery charger depends on the output current of the charger. The charger current of a single Li-ion battery is usually between 0.5A~1A, and the power management IC controls the size of the charger output current.
Portability
The charger is usually designed to be portable with USB input, which can be used to charge the battery through various power sources such as a laptop, mobile power, or car charger.
Intelligent Management
Most chargers nowadays are equipped with LCDs that can show charging progress or battery information, and Apple phones can even detect battery capacity and provide battery maintenance advice.
18650 Rechargeable Battery Characteristics
Charge and Discharge Characteristics
The charging and discharging process of an 18650 Li-ion battery is divided into two stages: constant current charging and constant voltage charging.
In the constant current stage, the battery is charged at a constant current until the voltage reaches 4.2V and then enters the constant voltage stage, where the voltage is maintained at 4.2V until the current drops below the set value to complete the charging. The battery's cycle life is usually more than 500 times, which varies from brand to brand; try to choose a well-known brand, such as Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, and so on.
Customizability

Although the size is fixed, 18650 rechargeable batteries can be combined in series and parallel to meet the needs of different voltages and capacities.
18650 Rechargeable Battery Manufacturers
The mainstream manufacturers of 18650 rechargeable lithium batteries include the following companies, which produce lithium batteries with uniform parameters and high safety performance.
Panasonic
Panasonic is one of the world's leading manufacturers of 18650 rechargeable lithium batteries, with outstanding performance in electric vehicles and consumer electronics. Its batteries are known for their high energy density, stability, and safety, and the famous Tesla new energy car also uses Panasonic lithium batteries.
LG
LG is one of the world's leading battery suppliers. Its 18650 rechargeable batteries are widely used in laptop computers, consumer electronics, and electric vehicles; LG's batteries are characterized by high energy density and good charging and discharging performance.
Sony
Sony was one of the first companies to develop 18650 rechargeable lithium batteries, and its battery technology has always been at the forefront. Although Sony has sold its battery business, its technology is still widely used.
Samsung
A subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung Group, Samsung is also one of the key manufacturers of 18650 rechargeable batteries. Samsung's 18650 lithium batteries are as good as those of other well-known brands in terms of performance, cycle life, and energy density.
18650 Rechargeable Battery Safety Performance
18650 rechargeable batteries are designed with a safety valve to prevent explosion due to excessive internal pressure when charging with a charger. The batteries usually have internal protection boards and Li-ion battery protection ICs such as cheap TP4056 or high-end BQ24311DSGR, etc. Usually, different Li-ion battery protection ICs will be selected according to different needs to prevent over-charging, over-discharging, and short-circuiting. Nonetheless, the safety performance of the battery also depends on how the user uses it.
18650 charger charging precautions
Suitable charger: Choose a charger that is compatible with 18650 batteries, a smart charger with overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection. Read the charger parameters (e.g., voltage and current) to match the battery's.
Avoid overcharging: 18650 rechargeable batteries have a charging cut-off voltage, usually 4.2V.
Charging time: An 18650 rechargeable battery is usually completed within 2-4 hours, but a charging time that is too long may lead to accelerated aging of the battery and affect the battery life. If a battery pack is composed of multiple rechargeable batteries, such as new energy vehicles or other equipment, charging time refers to the product instruction manual.
Charging environment: Do not charge at a temperature that is too high or too low. High temperatures can cause the internal chemicals of the battery to react and damage the battery. Low temperature or humidity may cause battery leakage or short circuit. Ideally, the ambient temperature for battery charging should be kept between 10°C and 30°C.
Checking the Battery Condition: Check the battery for signs of leakage, deformation, or damage. If you find any abnormalities in the battery, stop using it immediately and dispose of it properly.
